Well, since someone suggested for me to post, I'll go ahead and make my strategy input into this thread.
This is the strategy that I used to get to about 6k acres at the end of the round this round after having 2 razes and 2 hits on me in the last week. The end game was a bit weird this round due to the Lorian factor, but without that, I think it could have gone to about 8k land if no mishaps (like razes or suicides would have happened).
-------------------------------------
OoP Wave 3 (this is my preferred wave for attacking)
550 acres
170 alchs 180 smithies 45 farms 35 towers 20 DM 40 homes 40 barracks 25 LY
Came out with all chams plus about 300 serpents. Hit OoP with 1100 chams. With that and about 400 more chams and 300 more serps within the next 12 hours got me about 300 acres in 2 rounds of attacking and then immediately switched to exploring.
After switching to exploring, immediately stop building smithies and go with diamond mines. I built up to 1000 diamond mines while getting barracks as high as possible without unemployment. I maintained a 2:1 serpents/chams ratio until I built up 10k serpents and then went with all chams from there for defence up until 3000 acres.
At 3000 acres, I saved up 6mil plat and raze'd rebuilt to this build:
1500 alchemies 900 barracks 330 farms 150 towers 120 homes
My military at the time was 20,000 chams and 10,000 serpents and I had 9 million points in each of the improvements by that time with 1000 diamond mines built early on in the round.
The conversion occurred around day 22 of the round and then I spent 3 days building up lizardmen and then attacked from there, building up barracks to the amount of troops I had.
By the end of the round, my build (% wise was like this)
50% racks 3% homes 12% farms 5.5% towers 29.5% alchemies
Using this with the imps I already had and increasing prestige from the hits I was getting, I was able to maintain 70 dpa and 50 opa while maintaining an income of about 40 plat per acre.
The rounds before this that I did the halfer strategy, I used 20% smithies/20% masonries/40% homes + towers/farms for the raze/rebuild. That actually worked better, but after the introduction of rax and the downgrading of smithies, the alchs became the better option.
This strategy is decent, but requires you to be skilled in many things, such as target searching using as few ops as possible, stealing and calculating other's spy ratio so you don't ever fail, and being aware of the progression of the round as far as DP requirements. In general, if there is no runaway with huge OP, this strategy will do much better and has the chance of making top 5 with it. However, with a runaway pushing OP/DP up at the top, it tends to stagnate and have a hard time catching up.
Good luck to those that try this in future rounds. It is a good strategy, but requires a fair amount of time, commitment, and understanding of the game.

that sure is an interesting strategy, i would never think about razing and so forth, plus those alcs! If you got to somewhere around 6k acres with that one, good; I'd probably delete already during the conversion (did Icekin conversion with WH & 7500 AM) =)
do you have a cs?

I got a question for those who understand the game well... wat's the point of barracks anyways?... does it really save that much space in population size, by storing military, like cabins?? cuz i think its useless to build baracks and homes... juz my opinion (reply welcome).
and another thing.. is it possible for the peasants to find homes in different buildings besides the homes u have to build? ...
